Overboard at Low Tide

Running The Tide
Oil on Canvas (900cm x 600cm)
Far North Queensland is full of amazing isolated beaches. This particular beach is on the way to Cape York. On the Coast between Lakefield National Park and Port Stewart. When we discovered this wonderful place, a few years ago now, we were enthralled by the outgoing tide.
The beach is alive with activity, crocodiles lay on the sand and rush for the water when disturbed, bait fish run in the shallows. A wetland lays behind the beach, which finds it's way to the shores in little creeks that flow into the sea.
With this painting I started it and was unhappy with the result, so after it sat in the studio for ages, I decided to challenge myself to try and express the shimmer of tide lines with long skinny strokes of thick colour. I remember the tidal expanse to be distant with soft colours, so I toned down the colour to pastel blends.
With refreshed eyes and hands I have been happily surprised, just like the day we found this amazing beach. It is still finding it's true home on the canvas as a work in progress.
